Wouter Staal is hoogleraar klinische kinder- en jeugdpsychiatrie (RadboudUMC/Karakter) en bijzonder hoogleraar autisme (Universiteit Leiden). Ook is Wouter de voorzitter van de Wetenschappelijke Raad van het Kenniscentrum.

Zijn onderzoek is gericht op de verbinding tussen fundamenteel wetenschappelijk onderzoek en de klinische praktijk en heeft een focus op neurobiologische ontwikkelingsstoornissen, in het bijzonder autisme. Hij is ambassadeur voor de Nederlandse Vereniging voor Autisme en Balans en lid van de stuurgroep autisme jonge kind. Daarnaast is hij actief binnen verschillende commissies en werkgroepen op het gebied van kennis en zorg ontwikkeling binnen de kinder- en jeugdpsychiatrie.
